When purchased in Ocala, Florida at the 2- year olds in training sale in 2007 I thought we had the steal of the century. We purchased a 2-year old by Horse Chestnut for $35,000 and he should have brougt $100,000. From jump street I thought this guy was the "real deal" and he certainly looked the part. I remember I was being interviewed at Hollywood Park by TVG and they asked if I had any hidden gems coming to the races? I replied," YES, when Big Mahogany shows up you can bet the farm!!" He was a disappointment to say the least as he battled injury after injury and never found the winners circle in his few starts through the years. Since he was a Pennsylvania bred I sent him to trainer Doug O'Neil who had a string of horses there. Big Mahogany raced 5 times back east and won 3 races while being nosed out of a 4th win. His lone disaster came when I started to think he was as good as I had thought he was. He was claimed today after a convincing victory at Penn National. He gave his heart in every race he ran for us and I was saddened when I realized he was not coming back to the barn today. Goodbye old friend. You never won the derby I thought you would win, but I appreciate the 110% effort you gave every time. |
